My suggestion is to go to the building department and request copies of the building permit and the final sign off on it.
Just say you lost the paperwork for it and would like to keep it for your records so not to raise any red flags
This way you know it the ones you received are forged in anyway.
Also you will know the inspector who signed off on the work.
Also ask for a copy of the blueprints that were submitted and any engineering paperwork that goes along with it.
This way you will find out the Architect and the Engineer that put your plans together.

Just act like there is nothing wrong and you just want these things for your records.

I think that this is a good way to start before bringing up anything to anyone
this way you have all the information before proceeding,
and you just may find out quite a bit more that you do not know now.

So I have found out a little more about this house...

I called the Building Department, and they have a history on this house.
The last time a permit was pulled on it was 47 years ago in 1975 for plumbing work.

Fort Bragg Building Department: 707-964-5379

I also called the Planning Department, but they are closed on Fridays,
but will be in the office on Monday so I will call again then.

Fort Bragg Planning Department: 707-234-6661

I then called the County Assessor Office.

Mendocino Assessor Department: 707-234-6800

...and they gave me the Owners Name and Address.
